Sun Pitchers, South American Pitcher Plant, Marsh Pitcher Plant
Somewhat difficult to find, and expensive
Good for the intermediate to experienced collector
Good for a small terrarium -- difficult to grow outdoors in many regions
Dormancy not a requirement
I have eight seeds planted, (H. heterodoxa) so hopefully I'll have some plants to look at soon. They seem similar to Sarracenias at first, but there are a few differences. First, the flowers are more orchid like. Second, there is no lid covering the tube. Third, they are more difficult to grow. They are herbaceous plants that would die if they spend several days above 78F, so many people can't grow them outside. If you can keep your Darlingtonia alive, then this plant is also a possibility for you.
The available species include Heliamphora: nutans, neblinae, ionasi, tatei, minor, and heterodoxa.
Growing Media:
From what I read, I plan to use a mixture of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. This plant can easily go into transplant shock, so be careful. My seedlings right now are in a mixture of peat, sand, and some perlite.
Temperatures:
As mentioned above, do not allow temperatures to go above 78F. Summer temps should be 55-75F, while winters can be 45-60F. Easier if grown indoors.
Water & Humidity:
During the warmer times, water constantly, daily if needed. High humidity is also a must, as with other CP's. So if you grow it indoors, you may have to grow it in a terrarium.
Light:
The more, the better. But make sure the soil stays below 78F. Indoor light needs to be bright, keep the bulbs close to the plant for 10+ hours.
Asexual Reproduction:
Sexual Reproduction:
The stigma is willing to receive pollen for a few days after the flower opens, but anthers produce pollen several days later, only after the stigma is acceptable. Since the timing is off, you will need a couple or more flowers at one time to successfully pollinate this plant. Germination is very slow, taking 4-5 months.
