Butterworts get their names from the slimy/greasy feeling of their leaves. These plants grow in varies regions, from arctic, temperate, and tropical areas around the world! What's more, some plants in the group actually prefer alkaline soil over acidic soil. They are herbaceous perennials with flat rosetted leaves.
These plants display some beautiful flowers, ranging yellow, white, blue, violet, to purple. They bloom early in the season, and once more towards the end.
The leaves emit a slight odor, which is believed to attract insects to the leaves, whereas they get caught up in the sticky substance, and are digested through the leaves. Larger insects can escape if they can break free from the mucilage.
I haven't had the best of luck with these plants, and currently don't own any.
